The Department of Police and Emergency Management (DPEM) recently issued its Crime Statistics Supplement 2014-15 that provides statistical data on crimes committed during this period. The report also provides recent trends in crime activity, comparing the latest trends with those from previous years.
An increase in Property Crime
Alarmingly, offences recorded in the 2014-15 period had increased 12.1% from the previous year. More concerning is crime rates were dropping in Tasmania, since 2010-11, until the last few years when crime began to spike upwards again. in the 2014-15 period, total offences recorded and cleared in Tasmania was 27,647, higher than the crime levels recorded back in 2010-11 which was 27,487. The total figure for the 2013-14 period was 24,668.
The total figures are categorised into four groups. One of those categories is 'Offences Against Property' which had increased by 14.4%. This followed an increase of 5% the previous year. Within this statistic, there was a 23% rise in burglary, and a 34% increase in stealing (not including motor vehicles).
How to protect your property
Preventing crime from taking place on your property is never a guarantee. However, installing a security system for your home or business often deters burgulars targeting your assets. There are many different variants of security systems that can be installed on your property:
-
Monitored Alarm Systems
A Monitored Alarm System is a security system that utilises strategically positioned sensors to detect movement within rooms of your property. When a sensor is triggered, the alarm sounds, and a phone call is sent to the monitoring service provider alerting them of a possible invasion. A security officer is then dispatched to your property for investigation.
-
CCTV Camera Systems
CCTV camera systems are a terrific deterrent for burglary. A high quality CCTV camera not only records activity inside and outside your property, but can also stream video directly to your computer or smartphone, should you wish to check on your property. CCTV also helps police in catching criminals after a crime has been commited. In our experience, CCTV cameras we have installed has aided police in catching criminals who have stolen items from neighbouring properties.
