Simple tips to secure your home and community20 Aug 2017

Although securing your home from burglary may appear straight forward with a common sense approach towards taking basic security measures, we can all become nonchalant at times, especially with our Aussie laid back attitude of ‘she’ll be right’. There is a variety of measures we can all take to suit our individual needs, we hope you find the following tips and links helpful.

It is more than just theft

The Department of Police, Fire and Emergency Management, 2015-2016 Crime Statistics Supplement gives a detailed breakdown of the offences reported in Tasmania during the financial year ending 30th June, 2016.

In addition to burglary and theft, home security systems and can help deter possible assaults and home invasions attempts. According to DPFEM on the above website, under Offences Against The Person, "in 2015-2016, over half the assaults (56%) were committed in a residential location". Keeping yourself and your loved one’s safe is as important as ever.

What items do burglars target most?

Burglars don’t want to spend a long length of time on the job, they act swiftly and target valuable portable items. This includes smart devices such as phones, tablets/ipads and laptops, as well as expensive jewellery and hardware tools and equipment. Each of which rank highly as stolen goods claimed under insurance. Australia’s largest general insurer IAG have had 47,000 household items valued at $48.9 million claimed for theft or damage over 2016 alone!

Therefore it makes sense to hide these particular items out of sight. Consider buying a Safe for expensive and sentimental jewellery or any other small valuable items. Place your portable smart gadgets away from windows and visible sight that may entice your home as an easy target. How do you currently store your hardware tools and equipment? Are they safely secured in the shed or garage? Did you know that Millennium Security can supply Home Automation installation? This means you can program your roller doors, lighting in and around the property, and any other electrical device from a distance or at home. Security systems have come a long way with advancing modern technology, there are many options to suit individual needs and budgets.

Burglary and stealing offences accounted for the majority of 'Offences against property' (69%) and the most common locations for burglary in buildings during 2015-2016 in Tasmania was in residential locations (65%). The most common locations for burglary-motor vehicle/other conveyances offences were also residential locations (44%) and in the street (23%).

What security measures do you currently have in place?

How well do you know your neighbours? It doesn’t matter whether you have just moved in or been on the block for years, it is never too late to make yourself known to your immediate neighbours to work together as a community, build friendship and look out for one another. NABO is a modern online social network helping to connect neighbourhoods within Australia, and is free to join up!

Have you considered signing up to Neighbourhood Watch Tasmania Inc? One of their aims is to keep residents informed by "Providing information of the incidence of crime in their area on a regular basis through newsletters and advising how to effectively identify suspicious people and activity and report same". Contact them through their website or by phoning 131 444 to find out more.

How secure are your windows and doors? Do you have deadlocks? Security screens? Never leave your doors open whilst upstairs or outside, it just takes that small moment in time for the unwanted intruder to enter. Also, be mindful about your belongings lying around your property, this includes large empty boxes that delivered the brand new TV or other expensive consumer products. This gives potential thieves an indication of what is inside your home. Bikes, scooters and skateboards left lying around the yard can also be easy targets; encourage everyone in the family to be aware of the potential dangers and take responsibility.

In addition to Neighbourhood Watch, if you have an alarm system and/or CCTV cameras installed, do you have adequate stickers displayed clearly around your home as a visual deterrent?

Millennium Security can assist you in improving the security of your home and your community.
